Speech

: the uncreated Speech and its created carriers

How is the uncreated read from created pages?

Truly the Qur'an is the Speech of Allah: from Him it came forth as utterance — without "how" — and He sent it down upon His Messenger as revelation.
al-'Aqida al-Tahawiyya · matn, 10th century

Speech is an attribute of the Creator

Among the attributes by which Revelation describes Allah is Speech — kalam: He commands, promises, recounts. The says three things about the Qur'an at once: it is the Speech of Allah; it came forth from Him — without "how"; and it is not created: "not created like the speech of creatures," al-Tahawi adds. The Sunni creed holds this firmly: the Qur'an is not one composition among compositions, but the Speech of the Creator.

Yet open a mushaf — and you will see ink on paper, fresh off a factory line. Turn on a recitation — and you will hear a reciter's voice, a vibration of air born this very moment. How is the uncreated read off created pages and heard in a created voice? This is no sceptic's trick — it is a working question of the tradition itself.

The Speech and its garments

Mature kalam answers with a distinction. Speech as an attribute of Allah is , "inner speech": it subsists in the Essence — without letters, without sound, without sequence, outside language and time — and is uncreated, as no attribute of the Creator is created. The letters in which the Qur'an is written and the sounds in which it is recited belong to the created world: they have a beginning, a material, a place. An old formula draws this into a single line: the Speech is the Speech of the Creator, and the voice is the voice of the reciter. What we read and hear points to the Speech of Allah — and the Speech in the proper sense remains it, not the ink and not the vibration of air.

The Qur'an is the uncreated Speech of Allah — a tenet of the creed. The distinction between the inner Speech and its created expressions was honed by the later school: it is the systematizers' language, not the matn's own. And the distinction does not demote the mushaf: what is written in it is the Speech of Allah — read, memorized, kept; created are the paper, the ink, the voice and the hearing — everything by which the created world bears it.

إِنَّمَا أَمْرُهُ إِذَا أَرَادَ شَيْئًا أَن يَقُولَ لَهُ كُن فَيَكُونُ

His command, when He wills a thing, is only to say to it: "Be!" — and it is.

The journey of a single

An ayah has a path through the physical world. In the reciter's throat — vibrating vocal cords; in the air — a pressure wave: slightly denser, slightly thinner, hundreds of times a second. In a microphone it becomes current; in a phone's memory, cell charges; on the air, a radio wave; on a page, a layer of pigment on cellulose; in the eye, a cascade of photochemical reactions. Physics describes every link exhaustively: frequencies, voltages, reflection spectra.

And what stayed unchanged along the way? Not the material — it changed a dozen times. Not the form of the signal — wave, current, charge, pigment. What stayed unchanged is what you read or heard at the journey's end: the same ayah. Carriers replace one another like garments; what is carried is not of their number. This is not yet theology — it is the everyday fact of all speech and all writing. But we will need it in a minute.

The science of communication is silent about meaning

This fact has a rigorous science of its own — information theory. In 1948 Claude Shannon built the mathematics of message transmission: the bit, channel capacity, redundancy, error-correcting codes — all of digital communication stands on it. And on the very first page Shannon drew the boundary of his own theory: messages frequently carry meaning, but these semantic aspects "are irrelevant to the engineering problem". The theory measures the distinguishability of messages — how many there could have been, and how reliably the chosen one arrives — not what they mean.

That boundary was no weakness — it was the condition of success: precisely by declining to measure meaning, the theory became exact. The bit counts the carrier; about meaning it keeps a silence as even as a voltmeter's about the truthfulness of a telegram. Meaning does not lie in grooves or in charges — it is with the speaker, and with whoever knows how to read. The science of communication knows this about itself — and says it aloud.

from the kalam

The Qur'an is the Speech of Allah Most High, uncreated; it is written in our mushafs, preserved in our hearts, recited with our tongues, heard with our ears — yet not inhering in them.

The Voyagers' message

The cover of the golden record carried since 1977 by the two Voyager probes; both are now in interstellar space. Engraved in the aluminium is a key for reading: a diagram for playing the record, a map of fourteen pulsars — the Sun's return address — and the hydrogen atom whose transition sets the unit of time for all the other diagrams. The engraving is expected to stay legible for a billion years or more.

Without a key the carrier is mute: the grooves hold Earth's voices only for one who can learn to read them.

The borne and the bearer

Physics and information theory, examining speech, see only carriers — and say themselves that meaning is no part of their subject: it cannot be read out of a wave or weighed in bits. Kalam, speaking of the Speech of Allah, distinguishes the uncreated Speech — and the created letters, sounds and pages that point to it. The grammar of the two distinctions is kindred: what is borne is not identical with what bears it, and the error begins where the two are confused.

And about scale — lest the analogy pose as identity. The meaning of human speech is itself a creature: it lives in the minds of speakers and dies with them. Kalam nafsi is not "meaning in general" but an attribute of the Creator: not sound and not letter — not because it is "information", but because nothing created belongs to the Essence. The distinction "carrier — carried" is only a ladder here: it helps one see that the question "how is the uncreated read off a created page?" is posed no more absurdly than the question of how one ayah lives in a wave, a current and a pigment. There the ladder ends.

What did Musa hear?

The Qur'an names Musa as the one granted direct speech — and on this ayah the schools part over a fine question: what exactly did the prophet hear at the mountain? The Ash'ari line answers: Musa heard the uncreated Speech itself — without letter and without sound, ; therein lies the singularity of his gift. The Maturidi line is more guarded: what is heard is only a created sound, created by Allah and pointing to His Speech — the school's formula runs exactly so: "what is heard is only that which indicates it"; Musa's singularity is that the indication was given him without the mediation of book or angel.

What the schools share is greater than what divides them: the Speech of Allah is real and uncreated; Musa was truly granted being spoken to — the ayah affirms it with an emphasis that cuts off allegory; and neither school ascribes a created "how" to the Speech of the Creator. What differs is the model of hearing.

Say: "If the sea were ink for the words of my Lord, the sea would be spent before the words of my Lord are spent — even if We brought as much again to replenish it."
Qur'an 18:109 · translation of the meaning

"Be!" — kun — is not code and not an algorithm: with this word Revelation expresses the will and power of the Creator, not a "program that boots the universe". Symmetrically, the opposite too: "science has shown there are only carriers, and meaning is an illusion" — not a result but metaphysics, which communication theory itself claims no part of. And the limit here is simple: the grooves of a record and the ink of the sea come to an end — the words of our Lord do not.
