Resurrection

He who began creation brings it back

If the body has decayed and scattered — what does "the same person" mean?

We believe in the resurrection and the recompense of deeds on the Day of Judgement, in the presentation and the reckoning, in the reading of the book, and in reward and punishment.
al-'Aqida al-Tahawiyya · matn, 10th century

He who began — brings back

Among the names of Allah are al-Mubdi' and al-Mu'id: the Originator of creation and the One who brings it back. The Qur'an sets them as an argument: "He originates creation, then brings it back, and that is easier for Him" (30:27). He from whom the world came out of non-existence is all the more able to gather it anew: resurrection is no greater difficulty, but the same act a second time.

The objection is ancient, and the Qur'an raises it itself — "who will give life to the bones when they have decayed?". The answer is given in the same place, and it is not about a mechanism but about the One who acts.

He said: "Who will give life to the bones when they have decayed?" Say: "He who created them the first time will give them life, and He knows every creature."
Qur'an 36:78–79 · translation of the meaning

You are not your atoms

Matter does not linger in the body: cells are replaced, atoms come and go with food, water, air; over the years the body renews most of its material. The child you were and you now are, literally, different matter. And yet it is you: identity does not rest on atoms.

Then the ancient objection misses the mark. "The atoms scattered, entered the earth and other bodies" — yes; but if even in life "the same person" did not mean "the same particles", their scattering cancels nothing. Where "you" are recorded science does not know; but it was never a matter of a handful of atoms.

The record is not lost

Revelation answers "how will He gather them?" not with a mechanism but with knowledge: "We know what the earth diminishes of them, and with Us is a preserving book" (50:4). Where it scattered, what it entered — nothing falls outside the Creator's awareness. This is the same Tablet from the Hall of : the record of the Knowing One, for whom "has decayed" is no difficulty.

The Creator's knowledge is not a vast archive, and resurrection is not the restoring of a file from a copy: it is a ladder, not an identity. Science has only shown that identity and matter are two different things; the resurrection itself is the work of the power of the One who began.

Is not He who created the heavens and the earth able to create the like of them? Yes indeed — He is the All-Creating, the All-Knowing! When He wills a thing, His command is only to say to it: "Be!" — and it is.
Qur'an 36:81–82 · translation of the meaning

He will say: "How many years did you remain on the earth?" They will say: "We remained a day or part of a day."
Qur'an 23:112–113 · translation of the meaning

A day or part of a day

Between death and resurrection lies the barzakh, a barrier. Revelation speaks of it sparingly, but names one trait: time there is experienced differently. The resurrected answer that they remained "a day or part of a day", when ages had passed.

The Hall of Time already showed: "now" and duration are not an absolute backdrop but a property of the observer. The barzakh is not its twin — it has no physical image. But the habit of treating one's own time as the only real one weakens beforehand: even in the created world, duration is not one and the same for all.
