Time

Qidam and baqa': beyond duration

What does "eternal" mean — very long, or outside time altogether?

قَدِيمٌ بِلَا ابْتِدَاءٍ، دَائِمٌ بِلَا انْتِهَاءٍ

Eternal without beginning; everlasting without end.
al-'Aqida al-Tahawiyya · matn, 10th century

from the kalam

From this it is said in common usage: "this is an old building", "this is an aged elder". But this meaning is not intended regarding the Maker; rather, what is intended by "eternal" among His attributes is the One to whose existence there is no beginning.
al-Babarti · Sharh al-'Aqida al-Tahawiyya · 14th century · translation of the meaning

Beyond duration

Qidam is not a "very long past" but freedom from beginning. Baqa' is not an "unending future" but freedom from end. Classical speaks of God's eternity through negation: the Creator does not "last longer than everything" — He is not described by duration at all, just as He is not described by a coordinate.

Time in this picture is part of creation: the alternation of night and day, the counting of terms, the very possibility of "before" and "after". The Creator of this order is not contained by it.

The argument from origination

From the createdness of time, kalam built its first argument — , the argument from origination. Everything around us changes. Day gives way to night, bodies age, stars burn out. What changes is not eternal: each of its states began at some point. And what is not free of the originated must itself have a beginning. The world is a succession of such states; therefore it too came to be. And what comes to be needs an Originator who Himself did not come to be. By this road walked the early scholars of both schools; by it walked al-Maturidi himself.

It is worth distinguishing what the argument stands on — and what it does not. It needs no telescopes: the bare succession of states, any states, suffices. The age of the Universe and the fate of the Big Bang add nothing to it and take nothing away — of this the honest boundary will yet speak. And it is not alone: it has two siblings — the argument from determination and the argument from the possible. Three roads of kalam to the One.

Not since creating creation did He become entitled to the name "Creator"; nor by originating beings did He acquire the name "Originator".

Is bringing-into-being eternal?

The line you have just read is an old knot of kalam. The names "Creator" and "Originator" are eternal, yet the created came to be; how are these held together? The Maturidis answer with the doctrine of : bringing-into-being is a distinct eternal attribute of the Essence, alongside knowledge, will and power. The attribute itself is eternal; what it brings into being comes to be in its appointed time. The Ash'aris reply: no separate attribute is needed. Bringing-into-being is the eternal power turned toward a thing; what comes to be is only the thing's relation to it, not something in the Creator Himself.

The dispute is subtle, but both answers guard the same thing: the Creator does not change with the world's coming-to-be. He did not "become" the Creator, nor acquire anything new with creation — the said this plainly. That is why the seam stands in the Hall of Time: both schools refuse to fit God into "before" and "after" — even into "before creation".

No shared "now"

Special relativity did to "now" what cosmology did to "center". Two distant events with no causal link between them are simultaneous for one observer and not for another; even their order can differ. Both are right. The Universe has no common clock — and no single moment of "now" stretched across all of existence.

This is not the exotica of deep space but the tested structure of the world. Alongside the relativity of simultaneity stands another effect: clocks in orbit and clocks on the ground really do run differently — by measurable microseconds per day. Without these corrections, the satellite navigation in your phone would not work.

The galaxy cluster SMACS 0723. Its light traveled 4.6 billion years to the telescope's mirror. The light of the most distant confirmed galaxies in the frame — about 13 billion. Looking deep, we look into the past.

contemplative analogy

Created time

Time, it turned out, has an anatomy: it is coupled to space, it slows near mass, it depends on the observer's motion. It is not an absolute backdrop against which the world happens — it is part of the world's construction.

The consonance is this. Physics showed: time is a structure with properties. Kalam called time a creature for a thousand years, and the Creator — not subject to time. The first does not prove the second. But after Einstein the words "eternal without beginning" read more precisely: not "very old" — but outside duration altogether.
